Bellerophon To Beowulf To Batman: The Image Of The Hero
(Special Event)

Bellerophon To Beowulf To Batman: The Image Of The Hero: Undergraduates and Faculty Tackle the Changing Nature of "Heroism"
What is a hero? Does our conception of heroism have anything to do with what a hero was in the pre-modern world? Does Buffy have anything to do Beowulf? What about Perseus and Professor X?
A collaborative effort between undergraduates and faculty will seek to answer some of these questions.

During the first hour, groups of undergraduates will present their own research on various aspects of heroes and heroism as conceived in different times and places. The second hour will feature a faculty roundtable, consisting of five experts, who will offer their own findings and then open the floor to further discussion. Presenters will be:

Terry Papillon (Classics & Honors Program) - ancient world
Karen Swenson (English)- Norse sagas
Charlene Eska (English)- King Arthur
Stephen Prince (Communication)- modern pop culture
Kaye Graham (English)- Harry potter and modern children's literature
LtCol. William Stringer (Corps of Cadets)- modern military
