Sustainability Week: Fresh Water Heritage, A Walking Tour of Local Water Resources
(Special Event)
Alexander Black said of Blacksburg "...a piece of ground in a healthy climate, a fertile neighborhood with excellent springs thereon." The town was built around the water supply of Stroubles Creek. The creek powered a few mills that were a significant contribution to the town’s early economy. Spring houses were installed near the creek. The fire department was built along the creek to pump water. There were bridges built over the water. Stroubles Creek provided the Town’s water needs until a post-WWII population boom rendered its supply inadequate to meet the Town’s demand.
Since 1954, when the Blacksburg, VT, Christiansburg Water Authority was formed and began drawing drinking water from the New River, many historic features of our freshwater heritage were forgotten or lost. Since 1995, SEEDS (now in collaboration with the Blacksburg History Museum) has worked with students to raise awareness about Stroubles Creek, Blacksburg’s original source of freshwater and sustainable use of freshwater resources. Come explore some of the earliest uses of our freshwater springs and help create a vision for sustainable conservation and use of our precious freshwater heritage. More information...
