Sustainability Week: Geothermal Heat Pumps for Homes, Pat Bixler and Michael Ermann
(Special Event)

Geothermal Heat Pumps for Homes, Pat Bixler and Michael Ermann

The EPA has deemed geothermal heat pumps (also called "geo-exchange" or "ground-source-coupled" heat pumps) the most energy-efficient, environmentally-clean, and cost-effective space conditioning system available. Why? This presentation will provide a detailed overview of how a geothermal heat pump can make use of the constant temperature of the Earth to provide high quality heating and cooling while using significantly less energy than a conventional system. Beginning with a review of how a conventional heat pump works, the major components of a typical geothermal system will be described How the system works, why it is more efficient, and when and where it can be used effectively will be discussed. Different types of geothermal systems, including horizontal and vertical systems, open or closed loop systems, and surface pond systems will be compared. Several home owners in the NRV who have recently installed geothermal heat pumps will be available for comments and questions on their experience.
