"Molecular and Cellular Regulation of the Inflammation Network and its Connection with Human Diseases"
(Seminar/Conference)

SEMINAR by Liwu Li / Virginia Tech

NOTE THE LOCATION CHANGE from campus to the Corporate Research Center!

Excessive inflammation is the common mechanism for almost all human diseases including cardiovascular complication, infection and septic shock, neurological stress and disorders, as well as obesity and diabetes. Despite enormous effort at many other Medical Centers and Institutions targeting at specific diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease, the actual progress in effectively treating these diseases are marginal. The failure is largely due to the lack of system-wide analyses of the inflammation network. Our approach is to combine expertise in experimental molecular and cellular inflammation, imaging of inflamed tissues and organs, chemical and nano-intervention, as well as computational analyses of inflammation network. In particular, our laboratory has defined several novel cellular signaling pathways within the inflammation network. Furthermore, we have defined some critical nodes within the inflammation network essential for the pathogenesis and resolution of atherosclerosis and diabetes. In collaboration with John Tyson and Jianhua Xing, we are developing computational simulation of the complex inflammation network. With our revelation of the inflammation network and viable drugable targets, our eventual goal is to help designing effective intervention for these devastating inflammatory diseases by collaborating with chemists, computational experts, as well as clinical physicians. This seminar will introduce the initiative jointly taken by us at the Inflammation Center of Virginia Tech.
