Signing with Babies Workshop
(Seminar/Conference)
You can enjoy the pleasure of conversation with your baby and the relief of understanding your baby's needs well before your infant is able to talk. Babies can easily learn to express themselves with simple gestures, to let you know what they want and what they are observing about the world.
Research has shown that signing children generally display reduced frustration, better language development, and even higher IQ. Using a few signs from American Sign Language, you and your baby can enjoy these benefits of early two-way communication as well as the delight of understanding each other even before your child can speak.
You can begin signing with your baby at any time; many babies begin producing signs between six and twelve months of age. Toddlers, preschoolers, and children with special needs often use signs to clarify their initial attempts at speech and as substitutes for complicated words. Child care centers have also used Sign to help the children in their care express their desires and ideas. Any child who is not yet speaking clearly can benefit from these methods.
This free workshop will be offered Tuesday, November 11th, 6:15 to 8:15 pm in the Conference Room at the Virginia Tech Women's Center. Lap-sitting infants are welcome to attend with their parents.
For more information or to register for the class, please contact Thuja Jameson at tjameson@vt.edu. Please indicate the number of people who would like to attend, the age of your baby, and whether you plan to bring your baby (lap-sitting infants only). Registration will be limited to the first 25 participants. There is no charge for this class.
