Corn Mills for Kenya: Women's work and technology in a Kenyan village
(Special Event)
This year International Women in Need (IWin) will focus its fundraising and educational efforts on a campaign called CORN MILLS FOR KENYA. The goal is to raise money so that the Koriko Women's Group can purchase a power mill for grinding maize (corn) and millet, which are the staple foods in the community. The daily job of grinding corn is traditionally women's work in this village and many throughout Africa. This time-consuming and physically demanding process is done by hand, and consists of pounding the corn with a stone or pole. According to the Board on Science Technology for International Development, probably no single development could help rural Africa more than relief from this never-ending drudgery [than the provision of a grain mill]. It would recover millions of "lost" hours every year, and it would improve health and family welfare. IWiN will discuss and explore the various gender and development challenges that the Koriko Moyie Women's Group faces on a daily basis.
**Kenyan samosas (vegetarian) will be sold for $1.00 a piece, so don't forget to bring some money for a special lunch treat! All proceeds will support the Corn Mills for Kenya project.
Please share this information widely, and encourage others to attend.
We look forward to seeing you there.
