  New Metropolis Lecture Series
(Greater Washington DC Metro Area)

Rob Lang and Casey Dawkins, co-directors of the Metropolitan Institute at Virginia Tech, will discuss New Metro Politics. More than one-half of all Americans live in metro areas that exceed one million residents. These areas dominate the country's econoomy, accounting for an enormous share of its technology, venture capital, and advanced services, and shaping its political environnment through the metro electorate.

Lang and Dawkins will analyze metro voting patterns in the just-concluded 2008 national elections and talk about trends in party and issue identification and what these portend for the future.

Lang's research specialities include suburban studies, world cities, demographic and spatial anaylsis, housing and the built environment, and metropolitan governance. Dawkins' research focuses on metropolitan housing market dynamics, residential segregation, and the link between land use regulations and housing affordability.

The lecture will be available on podcast after the event.
