New Metropolis Lecture Series
(National Capital Region)
William H. Hudnet III, managing partner, Bill Hudnut Consultants LLC, and Urban Land Institute (ULI) Senior Fellow Emeritus, will present The Seven Silent Crises Facing Metropolitan America. In his lecture, Hudnut will discuss the challenges that metropolitan areas in the U.S. face in their quest to revitalize themselves and construct healthier urban futures less characterized and shaped by the negative effects of sprawl, car dependence, and income segregation. These challenges range over issues of regional governance, land use planning, infrastructure development, global warming and high energy costs, the provision of workforce housing, reintegration of retail development into communities, and the adoption of sustainable practices.
Hudnut served as the mayor of Indianapolis for 16 years, a U. S. Congressman, a board member of the National League of Cities, and mayor of Chevy Chase (Maryland). During his mayoral tenure in Indianapolis, he estalished a national reputation for city revitalization, work that he continued at the ULI where he chaired more than two dozen mayors forums tht brought together public officials, architects, developers, academics, and other experts to discuss urban revitalization. Hudnut has also held posts at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, the Hudson Institute in Indianapolis, and the Civic Federation in Chicago.
(He's also the one, who in 1984, stole the former Baltimore-now Indianapolis Colts from Baltimore and will discuss this if asked about it!)
A reception will follow the discussion.
The lecture will be available on podcast following the event. More information...
