  Rhapsody on a Darwinian Theme
(Academic)

Distinguished Alumni Professor Vassiliki Betty Smocovitis (Department of History and Department of Biology, University of Florida) will present a multi-media show entitled "Rhapsody on a Darwinian Theme: Darwin in Song in Musical Production" in the seminar series in Science, Technology, and Society.

Abstract:
This is a lecture on Darwin, his theory, and its expression in Anglo-American popular culture. It explores a number of substantive issues in the history of evolution pertaining to controversies over Darwin and the reception of his theory, but does so in a lighthearted and engaging manner (music will be played and discussed). The lecture is designed to introduce a general audience to the life of Darwin, to introduce some new insights about his work, and to provoke thought about the relationship between science and popular culture.
