From phantom limb to action observation: The sinuous path of a PhD
(VTC)

Sebastien Hetu
PhD Candidate
Universite Laval
Quebec, Canada

Action observation is an important process in the development of our motor repertoire. The close link between the motor and perception systems has led many to suggest that action observation may be used as a clinical tool. During this talk, Sebastien Hetu will first present data on how phantom limb movements can be used as a proxy to study the motor reorganization following amputation. These data may explain why mirror box therapy, a type of intervention using action observation, can help diminish phantom limb pain. Hetu will then present results highlighting the influence of action observation on cerebral function. Using several brain imaging approaches, these studies help bridge the gap between basic research and clinical application by using ecological tasks and by taking a closer look at individual differences in the response to action observation.
