Students interested in learning more about data management issues and best practices are invited to participate in a Data Management Bootcamp sponsored by five Virginia institutions, January 8-10, 2014. This collaborative event will feature experts from across the state and will provide an opportunity for local, hands-on practical experience on the third day.
Data management is an important topic for researchers and scholars across domains, especially as funding agencies increasingly require submission of data management plans with grant proposals. Data management plans are documents that describe the data and metadata that will be gathered in a study, and the processes for preserving and sharing that information.
These new requirements encourage researchers to plan ahead for data management and sharing and help to promote practices that facilitate reproducible research, data use and reuse, and interoperability among distributed systems.
Topics will include: Understanding Research Data, Organizing Data, File Formats and Transformation, Documentation and Metadata, Storage and Security, Data Protection, Rights and Access, and Preservation, Sharing and Licensing. A detailed agenda will be forthcoming.
Free to attend and offered to students in any discipline or academic program, the Bootcamp is offered via the 4VA telepresence system, across five sites: University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, James Madison University, George Mason University, and Old Dominion University. Space is limited at each campus location. Light refreshments will be provided.
The Data Management Bootcamp is an initiative of Virginia Tech's University Libraries, the Center for Digital Research and Scholarship, the Graduate School, and the Office of the Vice President for Research, in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Virginia, James Madison University, George Mason University, and Old Dominion University.
