MI + SPIA Lecture Series -- The Legacy of the Sochi Olympics and Putin's Russia
(Greater Washington DC Metro Area)
Robert Orttung, assistant director of the Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies at The George Washington University, will present the first 2014 lecture in a series sponsored by the Metropolitan Institute (MI) at Virginia Tech and the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA). Government and International Affairs (GIA) is also a cosponsor for this particular event.
His presentation is entitled, "The Legacy of the Sochi Olympics and Putin's Russia."
The Sochi Games will be the most expensive in history. They have raised questions about Russia's political economy, human rights situation, treatment of vulnerable populations, and security issues. This talk will examine what the Olympic experience tells us about today's Russia and its future place in the international community.
Orttung's upcoming book, The 2014 Winter Olympics and the Evolution of Putin's Russia (coauthored with Sufian Zhemukhov), will be released in September 2014 by Routledge.
Christopher Walker, executive director of the National Endowment for Democracy's International Forum for Democratic Studies, will be responding to Orttung's presentation. Gerard Toal, director of the GIA program at Virginia Tech, will serve as moderator.
