Service Learning in Large Classes: Benefits and Barriers (Large Class Instruction Workshop Series)
(Academic)
Service learning describes a set of teaching and learning practices that incorporate work in and with publics beyond the university classroom as a critical means for achieving various outcomes and course objectives. Because of the many benefits of service learning pedagogy, it seems like this engaging strategy could be of particular benefit to fostering student engagement in large classes. Yet, there seem to be some significant barriers to effectively implementing it in these settings (e.g. Instructor time investment, transportation, etc.). This session will explore the potential benefits and likely barriers of using service learning in large classes. Anecdotal stories of attempted experiences will set the stage and the whole group will weigh the pros/cons and discuss potential means of mitigating barriers. Please expect interactive discussion throughout.
