Peer Review Pedagogy to Support Authentic Engagement in Learning (Pedagogy in Practice Workshop Series)
(Academic)
In light of a pressing need for college graduates who are ready to engage in the workforce as critical, collaborative, and creative thinkers, instructors in higher education continue to look for approaches to learning that engage students with one another in framing and solving authentic, complex problems. Peer review, a process for students to constructively critique peer work with the goal of improvement, provides a means for students to actively collaborate on real problems while honing requisite knowledge and skills for effective problem posing and resolution in a team setting. In regards to assessment, peer review provides both process and product artifacts for an instructor to assess student progress toward identified learning goals and adjust those goals, as needed. Through this workshop, participants will construct an understanding of and rationale for peer review as an authentic learning and assessment approach. Given a model of peer review, they will plan for the use of peer review in a familiar learning context.
