Engines of Modernity: Black Sonic Women and the Open Road
The talk focuses on how cars figure into the feminist pop music imaginary, and considers the way that the automotive tradition undergirds the work of three drastically different black sonic women form the previous century: Zora Neale Hurston, Mary Lou Williams and Etta James. It will demonstrate the ways that each of these artist drew on concepts of automotive technologies to craft their respective sound aesthetics as well as a radical politics of black womanhood that perpetually and imaginatively disrupted the constraints of Jim Crow patriarchy.
