Improving Society: Nontrivial Theory, Data and Models for Change
(Greater Washington DC Metro Area)

Mark Orr will present "Improving Society: Nontrivial Theory, Data and Models for Change."

The seminar is sponsored by the Social and Decision Analytics Laboratory, Virginia Bioinformatics Institute at Virginia Tech.

Abstract: To face the myriad issues of human life in the 21st century, we must re-conceptualize how to promote the highest human potential and well-being. Unprecedented amounts of data, at fine levels of temporal granularity, offer the potential for novel insights into what it is to be human. However, to leverage these data to our benefit, we need to not only unify biological data across several levels of analysis but also to appropriate biological theory across the same levels of analysis, and to invent theory at the gaps. In the final analysis, computational models of the processes that generate society will serve as the mortar, among the theoretical and data bricks, to provide a larger and dynamic picture of what is and how to change society.
