Urban Design Seminar Series: Conversations on the Public Realm in the DC Region
(Greater Washington DC Metro Area)
Nate Heavers, assistant professor of landscape architecture, will explore the concept of urban arboreta, specifically looking at Washington, D.C., and Alexandria in "Arboreta in Washingtonensis: Collecting trees in the Public Realm."
Since the founding of the U.S. capital on the banks of the Potomac, the idea of collecting and planting trees from distant lands in the public realm of the city has been significant to its design and development. This talk will trace the history of tree planting in the public spaces of Washington, D.C., and Alexandria and suggest that the notion of the city as an arboretum has been active from the outset, meriting greater attention today.
Ray Mims, from the U.S. Botanic Garden and Sustainable Sites Initiative, has been invited to provide commentary.
There will be an opportunity for questions and answers and light refreshments will be served following the event.
This event is part of the Urban Design Seminar Series is sponsored by the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) and the Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center (WAAC).
