Public Experiments
Using the work of Critical Art Ensemble as a point of focus, Steve Kurtz will discuss the group's uses of scientific and sociological experimental methods to promote social change and to create new cultural possibilities. In addition, he will discuss how the meaning of experimentation has recently expanded in the arts.
Steve Kurtz is a professor of art at SUNY Buffalo and a founding member of the internationally acclaimed art and theory group Critical Art Ensemble (CAE). CAE is a collective of five tactical media practitioners of various specializations, who focus on the exploration of the intersections between art, critical theory, technology, and political activism.
In 2004, Kurtz and his artwork became the focus of an FBI bioterrorism investigation and subsequent prosecution. The case received widespread attention from the international art community for the issues of freedom of speech, freedom of expression and academic freedom that it represented. The charges were ultimately dismissed in 2008 as being "insufficient on its face."
