While large classes can present unique and meaningful learning opportunities, instructors of large classes often encounter significant challenges, such as managing the logistics of a large course and creating an environment for student connection and engagement. This workshop will address these challenges by presenting strategies developed by Virginia Tech's own large class instructors and/or found in recent literature. Based on feedback CIDER received from Virginia Tech's large class instructors during the 2013-2014 academic year, the topics covered during this workshop will include such issues as handling in-class distractions, engaging students, grading/assessing/testing, communicating effectively with students, and incorporating group work and/or peer learning. Participants will also have the opportunity to join a discussion and to share ideas about best practices in large class instruction. Join us to learn more about strategies for effectively teaching large classes!
