Reconstituting the Vanished: Gender, Memory, and Placemaking in the Delta South presents the collaborations of Lynda Frese and Barbara Allen
(Special Event)

Illustrating the Delta South means examining the influence of gender, history, and memory in Louisiana.

Reconstituting the Vanished: Gender, Memory, and Placemaking in the Delta South presents the collaborations of Lynda Frese and Barbara Allen. The exhibit will be displayed in Perspective Gallery from February 27 to May 16. Located on the second floor of Squires Student Center, the Perspective Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m.

Frese has made her home in South Louisiana since 1986 and teaches photography at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She has been an artist-in-residence in France, Italy, and Costa Rica.
Allen is a professor and co-director of the graduate program in Science, Technology, and Society in Virginia Tech's National Capital Region. Her research and teaching focus on science, technology, and social justice, the political sociology of knowledge, and public participation in science and technology.

Frese's art and Allen's written word combine for a powerful look at the shaping of the history of Louisiana.

They researched the lives of four notable Louisiana women by examining archival records, personal and historical artifacts, and other places that the women helped to create and shape.
The artwork themselves are digital photographic collages comprised of drawings and maps, scanned images and objects, and current and archival photographs.

"Through the combining of both text and image, we seek to reimagine the lives of four women who shaped the physical landscape, thus creating a geography of recollection," said the artists. "When viewed in concert, their reconstituted pasts more clearly reveal the interplay between individual agency, cultural practices, and the social structures of gender and race in the co-production of women's lives and the enduring places they helped create."

Frese will present her lecture entitled "Illuminating Hidden Histories through Art" on Friday, February 27 from noon to 1:00 p.m. in Brush Mountain A 3rd Floor Squires . A "Meet the Artist" reception will follow from 5 to 7 p.m. in Perspective Gallery. Both events are free and open to the public.
