Power Down Event
(Administration)
In connection with Virginia Tech's commitment to assist with protecting the integrity of the electric distribution grid during times of peak demand for electric power, there will be a "Power Down Event" from 2p to 3p on Thursday June 25, 2015. During this time, all users of electricity on the Virginia Tech Campus are asked to curtail the usage of electricity to the greatest extent possible.
The purpose of this exercise is to see how much electric usage we can curtail and how quickly that we can accomplish this target. During periods of peak demand on the power grid, Virginia Tech may be asked to decrease usage of electricity by 25% within 2 hours and then hold that reduced usage of electricity for several hours. As part of the "Power Down Event," central cooling systems will be turned off to reduce the use of electricity. Because we need to carefully monitor electricity use during the power down hour, users may want to consider beginning to power down at 145p.
What can we all do to help? A few suggestions include:
-Turning off lights in offices, common areas, and hallways
-Turning off personal computers and peripherals not in use
-Turning off shared electronics such as televisions, projectors, copiers, printers, fax machines when not in use
-Unplugging appliances such as coffee makers, refrigerators, washers/dryers, cooking appliances
-Turning off laboratory equipment not in use.
Virginia Tech Facilities appreciates the efforts of everyone on campus in supporting the Power Down Event on June 25 and for efforts to reduce the use of electricity during times of peak demand. More information...
