The Cyanotypes by Jan Downs
(Arts)
The Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention (CPSVP)and the Department of Biomedical Engineering & Mechanics (BEAM) proudly announce the new rotating exhibit in the Norris Hall Art Gallery.
This quarter we are featuring VT alumna, Jan Downs. Jan Downs' artistic passion lies in photography, focusing on a more documentary style that combines history and culture along with aesthetics. This most recent body of work, the Cyanotypes, is a welcome departure for Downs. The Cyanotypes, or sun prints, are camera-less images that use the sun's ultra violet rays to expose a photosensitive surface and uses only water to "develop" the image. This results in an environmentally friendly photographic medium.
Jan Downs is a photographer and VT alumna. Currently, she is an adjunct assistant professor at Radford University and teaches classes in photography, drawing, foundations and art history. Downs received a BFA in photography from VT in 2005 and completed an MFA un photography at Radford University in 2009.
