Arboretum of Utility-Friendly Trees at Hahn Horticulture Garden
Dr. Eric Wiseman, Associate Professor of Urban Forestry will lead a tour of the Arboretum of Utility-Friendly Trees . This arboretum is one of five arboreta located around the state that aim to educate the public about proper tree selection around overhead utility lines. The idea for these arboreta came about in the late 1990s when Dr. Bonnie Appleton (deceased horticulture professor at Virginia Tech) partnered with utility companies and municipalities to address the ill-advised planting of oaks, pines, and maples underneath power lines by citizens. The arboreta feature an assortment of native and non-native trees that mature at a short height, tolerate tough growing environments, and are easy to plant and maintain. The arboretum located in the Hahn Horticulture Garden started with 8 trees in 2005 and has steadily grown to over 50 specimens, all planted by Virginia Tech students.
