Please join the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies for a free screening of "12 Years a Slave" (2013) at Blacksburg's historic Lyric Theatre. Based on the true story of Solomon Northup, a free-born New York man who was kidnapped into slavery, "12 Years a Slave" has been widely praised for its unflinching portrayal of the brutality of American slavery. Dr. Gena Chandler-Smith (English) and Dr. Paul Quigley (History) will offer remarks on the literary and historical contexts of the movie and participate in an audience discussion.
