Presentation: "After the Accusation: The Lasting Impact of Plagiarism Trauma on Student Writing Behaviors." Abstract: Plagiarism accusations, often viewed as benign in and of themselves, have lasting impact on how students see themselves and how they approach the learning process. Drawing on interviews with students who have been accused of plagiarism and faculty who have been involved in plagiarism accusations, I examine academic failure's relationship to students' personal embrace of failure, to their belief in themselves as failures.
Plagiarism accusations can lead to identify trauma in which students are forced to reckon with a vision of themselves that they don't recognize. The fear and anxiety generated by plagiarism accusations and the associated culture of vigilant plagiarism detection has long-term impact on students' affective sense of self and their relationships within academia. Instead of policing plagiarism, how might we instead foster demonstrations of intertextuality and textual borrowing in overt, generatvie ways in the classroom?
