'From the Page to the Stage: Making History Sing' A conversation with playwright Catherine Bush
(Music/Theatre/Dance)
Catherine Bush is the playwright-in-residence at Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia. A professional playwright who has lived and worked in both New York City and in Appalachia, Ms. Bush will speak to the opportunities and challenges of creating work in these very different settings and share reflections on her own creative process.
Bush's approach to playwriting incorporates significant research, drawing on both primary and secondary sources to elucidate a time, place, and its people. One of her recent works is a musical about the ratification of the nineteenth amendment called Winter Wheat. The show premiered at Barter Theatre in 2016 and will be revived there this summer to commemorate the centenary of the ratification of the amendment that gave women the right to vote.
Generous support for this talk has been provided by the Office of the Provost's Women & Minority Artist and Scholars Lecture Series and the School of Performing Arts. More information...
