  Stephen Gibson-Visiting Writer
(English)

Join us for a Visiting Writers & Teachers Series event!

Poet: Stephen Gibson
"How Ekphrasis Works-Or Doesn't"

In the presentation, and in the Q&A, we will explore writing more effective ekphrastic poems by better understanding what Ekphrasis is as a type of writing and what is involved in its creating, and whether there might be some drawbacks worth recognizing and avoiding. We will do this through examining key ideas various writers have talked about regarding Ekphrasis itself and explore those ideas through examining ekphrastic poems other poets have written. During the Q&A we might have the opportunity to explore how some writers have also used ekphrastic writing as one means for overcoming, or at least circumventing, that bugaboo-fear of the blank page. Finally, we will explore how Ekphrasis often becomes an exploration of self.

Stephen Gibson's "Self-Portrait in a Door-Length Mirror" won the 2017 Miller Williams Prize from the University of Arkansas Press. Earlier collections include "The Garden of Earthly Delights Book of Ghazals" (Texas Review Press), Rorschach Art Too (2014 Donald Justice Prize, StoryLine Press), Paradise (Miller Williams finalist, University of Arkansas), and others.
