Developing Effective Advising Strategies for Transfer Students and Other Special Populations
While it is typical for transfer students to arrive on campus with specific issues and needs, many of these students are also “at-risk” because they are first-generation, students of color, student-athletes, and/or under-prepared to cope with the demands and environments of highly competitive four-year campuses. Many transfer students also report not receiving the kind of outreach (intrusive advising) that increasingly characterizes their experiences in two-year colleges. This presentation will highlight specific challenges confronted by transfer students as a means of developing effective individual and institutional interventions to meet the needs of transfer and other at-risk cohorts. The guest speaker will be Thomas Brown (Thomas Brown & Associates) who is a nationally recognized speaker on issues related to supporting the achievement and success of at-risk students.
We hope to see you there! Thank you.
