Global Access to AIDS Medications: Local and Global Dimensions
(Seminar/Conference)

Despite being a well-researched disease, AIDS is still ravaging several developing nations across the globe. The availability of second-line anti-retroviral therapy is crucial for managing the disease in AIDS patients. India is the largest producer of cheap generic HIV drugs that are exported to developing nations. Implementation of certain international and in-country policies will prevent access to anti-HIV medication to poor people worldwide and undermine genuine scientific innovation.

Dr. Vineeta Gupta is the Founder-Director of the Stop HIV/AIDS in India Initiative She holds both a medical and law degree and has an impressive twenty years of experience as a grassroots human rights activist and community organizer both in India and the U.S. A strong believer in community initiative and leadership, especially of women, her campaigns focus on organizing people for demanding their social, economic and political rights. She is the recipient of the Rotary Service to Humanity Award (2001) for upholding ethical standards in society and fighting against corruption and the People's Appreciation Award (2000). She has spoken on health care, HIV/AIDS-related issues, global trade, human rights and policies of international financial institutions at numerous university campuses and prestigious international forums
