New Metropolis Lecture Series
Peter Katz, international authority on the new urbanism, author of The New Urbanism:Toward an Architecture of Community (McGraw Hill, 1994), and professor in practice at Virginia Tech's Urban Affairs and Planning program in Alexandria, will present The New Revolution: Form-Based Codes." Katz will discuss how form-based codes, which focus more on building design, shape, and form, than on function, create the template for achieving high-quality urban environments. Buildings constructed on form-based design principles are more durable since they survive business cycles more easily than buildings constructed for single use functions.
Katz is an urban theorist, marketing consultant and community design advocate. As the founding principal of San Francisco-based Stratagem Consultants, Katz has directed numerous real estate and marketing projects. The firm seeks innovative solutions that clearly express the most positive aspects of a project's physical design, social mission, and architectural character. Clients include the Prudential Realty Group, Port of Oakland, Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Comopany, Embarcadero Center Liimited and the Joseph Alfindre Company.
