Genetics, Bioinformatics & Computational Biology (GBCB) Seminar
(Seminar/Conference)

Speaker: Dr. Tom Slezak from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Title: Bio-Informatics for Bio-Defense

Abstract: In early 2000 the DOE announced that the National Labs would be providing a wide-area
pathogen monitoring system for the 2002 Winter Olympic games in Salt Lake City. The
Livermore, Los Alamos, and Sandia labs had roles in this. The Livermore (LLNL) team
developed comparative genomics techniques to automate the design of pathogen DNA signatures.
This system, while still under development, was placed into 7x24 live use immediately after
the anthrax attacks in the Fall of 2001. The success of the system and the assays led to
the nationwide BioWatch system being established in early 2003. This system has now had
well over 5M live assays run with zero false positives. This talk will discuss how LLNL
has applied bioinformatics to improve signature target selection for both DNA and protein
assays. Current work on microarrays to address problems of engineered and emerging threats
will be discussed, along with speculation about future challenges in the biodefense field.

Public welcome! Refreshments from 3:15-3:50, seminar starts promptly at 4pm.
