Navajo Blessingway Ceremony
(Special Event)
Navajo spiritual leader Albert Damon, Sr. will perform a Blessingway ceremony for Virginia Tech students, faculty, staff and any interested parties who were impacted by the tragic events of April 16, 2007. The Blessingway is the central ceremony in the Navajo cosmology and ceremonial complex. It is intended to restore individuals and communities to a state of balance with th universe after the intrusion of chaotic forces into their lives.
It is unusual for Navajo Ha’ataalis (roughly translated, “singers” in reference to the complex songs that frame these ceremonies) to take these ceremonies beyond the Navajo homeland. However, Mr. Damon felt compelled to make this generous offer after his granddaughter, Kimberly Arviso, entered Virginia Tech as a freshman this fall. This much-abbreviated version of the Blessingway will take place at 1 PM at the 4/16 Memorial on the Virginia Tech Drillfield and is open to the public. However, it is requested that visitors and participants not bring cameras or other recording equipment.

The presentation following the Blessingway ceremony is sponsored by The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies American Indian Studies and Humanities Programs, and Multicultural Programs and Services.
