Scholar Quick Start Series: Overview

Welcome to Scholar, a robust learning and collaboration system which offers tools for teaching and learning, research and collaboration, and ePortfolio assessment/accreditation projects. This abbreviated hands-on workshop provides you with "only what you need to know" in Scholar. This introductory workshop to Scholar will provide you with the basic skills to successfully navigate and understand the Scholar interface and is highly recommended for anyone new to Scholar. You will learn about the three "types" of Scholar sites available within the one system and which one you should select for your purposes (Course sites, Project sites, versus ePortfolio sites). You will learn how to quickly get started with using Scholar as a "participant," by learning the basics of:
1. Scholar navigation,
2. the use of the "My Workspace" area
3. specific tools available within the "My Workspace" area (i.e., Calendar, Resources, and Membership),
4. how to update your contact ("staff") information through the "Profile" tool,
5. how to customize your site "tabs" and general "preferences,"
6. and where you (or your students) can go for answers, support, and live help.
Tools specific to course instruction (i.e., "Assignments, Syllabus, Tests & Quizzes, etc.") will not be covered during this session.
Workshop Assumptions:
To complete the workshop, it is assumed that workshop participants have:
1. Basic computer and Internet browsing skills and a desire to use the web to support teaching.
2. No or limited previous Scholar experience.
Workshop Objectives & Outcomes:
This workshop will cover the following topics and upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the differences between the three Scholar site types available within the one system.
2. Select the best Scholar site type for their needs (whether it be Course, Project, or ePortfolio).
3. Navigate the Scholar layout.
4. Select and customize tools and settings for an improved Scholar experience.
