Professor Alfred Nordmann (Technical University Darmstadt)
(Seminar/Conference)
This Friday, September 4, 2009, the Seminar Series in Science and Technology Studies (STS) will host Alfred Nordmann, Professor of Philosophy at the Technical University Darmstadt (TUD), and Visiting Centenary Professor at the Philosophy Department, University of South Carolina. Professor Nordmann's talk, "The Age of Technoscience: Arguing for an Epochal Break" will take place at 3:30 PM in 1020 Torgersen, and will be followed by a catered reception at the University Club, sponsored by the Departments of STS, Philosophy, Political Science, and CLAHS.
Alfred Nordmann's connections with Virginia Tech reach back two decades: in the late 1980s, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor at this university. After several years working in German theaters as a dramaturge, he returned to academia and now teaches at Tech's partner university in Germany. An official CLAHS delegation that visited the Technical University Darmstadt in June learned that Professor Nordmann is spearheading efforts to increase cooperation among VT and TUD faculty and graduate students in the Humanities and Social Sciences. To continue and flesh out this initial conversation, the Department of Science and Technology in Society will host a brown bag lunch at 12:30 PM in 132 Lane (please bring your lunch). Specifically, we want to discuss the idea of a joint summer school, where faculty and graduate students from both VT and the TUD could get a chance to explore common interests, exchange possibilities, and potential research synergies. Faculty and especially graduate students interested in doing research in Germany are encouraged to attend.
