  ICTAS Black Swan Seminar Series
(Seminar/Conference)

The Role of Art and Design in STEM Research and Education
Facilitators: Benjamin Knapp / Ruth Waalkes

This talk will present the new Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech and its partner research institute, The Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT). Examples will be discussed that underscore the critical role art and design play in STEM research and education. With this established, the talk will pose two black swan questions:

1. Why is it so difficult to assemble and fund truly trans-disciplinary research teams to solve the grand challenges in science and engineering?

2. What does the next generation of University and K-12 education look like that will teach students the necessary skills to work in a collaborative work environment?
