SCALE-ing UP: Learning through Teamwork and Engagement (Pedagogy in Practice Seminar Series)
(Academic)
In late spring 2012, the Center for Instructional Development and Educational Research (CIDER) published a new issue of Pedagogy in Practice, a publication that shares stories of Virginia Tech faculty who are engaging in holistic and transformative educational experiences through the creation of effectual pedagogy. The CIDER Pedagogy in Practice Seminar Series is being offered to enable participants to learn more about the practices shared in the publication. This seminar will extend the discussion of the pedagogy shared in the article entitled "Learning through Teamwork and Engagement."
SCALE-UP (student-centered active learning environment for undergraduate programs) is pedagogy for inquiry- and team-based learning that originated with undergraduate physics courses and has been adopted for just about any subject offered at a university. Studies have demonstrated improved learning gains and student attitudes in SCALE-UP versus traditional instruction. SCALE-UP provides opportunities for students to engage in "science as science is done" through collaborative exercises, even in large-enrollment classes. This workshop will introduce participants to the excitement of SCALE-UP as a learning community and engage them with the nuts-and-bolts of developing a SCALE-UP course.
