As part of the Through Feminist Eyes Speaker Series, through a reading of a range of song-and-dance sequences in contemporary Indian cinema in the Hindi language that use hip hop artistes and performative styles, Dr Madhavi Murty will discuss the processes through which the representation of modernity or modern subjecthood within mainstream Indian public culture is predicated on the appropriation of difference, but specifically on the appropriation of gendered blackness.
