Virginia Tech Life Science Seminar Series
(Seminar/Conference)
Dr. Caroline Harwood of the University of Washington-Seattle will give a presentation entitled, "From solar energy to bioenergy."
Hydrogen gas has received serious consideration as an alternative fuel to supplant petroleum. It is a clean-burning fuel that can be converted to electricity in hydrogen fuel cells and thus can be used to power automobiles or any other electricity-driven process. The photosynthetic bacterium Rhodopseudomonas palustris (R.pal) can convert agricultural and industrial wastes to hydrogen gas. The efficiency of this would be improved if we understood more about the basic biology of Rpal. I will discuss recent work on electron flow to hydrogen, on photosynthesis and on the biology of non-growing cells. More information...
