Lymphatic Contraction During Inflammation and Cancer Metastasis
(VTC)
Shan Liao, PhD
Postdoctoral Fellow
Edwin L. Steele Laboratories
Department of Radiation Oncology
Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School
Boston, Massachusetts
Antigen and dendritic cells enter draining lymph nodes to initiate an immune response. Metastatic
tumor cells also frequently spread through lymphatic vessels and colonize in lymph nodes. Subsequent
treatment of cancer patients with radiation and surgery frequently results in lymphedema. Although
disruptions of collecting lymphatic vessels are responsible for most cases of acquired lymphedema,
there is a paucity of data on the function and biology of these vessels due to the lack of a proper mouse
model. Chronic infections are frequently associated with lymphedema. Dr. Liao will discuss whether
resolution of infections is hindered by impairment of lymphatic contraction, reducing transport to the
lymph node and thereby impairing the immune response and antigen clearance.
