Progression of Chronic Kidney Disease and Preventing Loss of Lean Body Mass
(VTC)
Chronic kidney disease affects as many as 21 million people in the United States and puts them at high risk for the development of such complications as uremia and the progressive loss of kidney function. These problems can be successfully assessed and treated. Yet chronic kidney disease also causes insulin resistance and the loss of muscle protein, which complicates many catabolic conditions. Dr. Mitch will discuss experimental efforts to prevent the loss of muscle protein by blocking myostatin in muscle, and the promise of using this method to block muscle wasting in other catabolic conditions.
