Biophilic Urbanism: Nature + Cities
(Academic)
Guest Lecture by Dr. Timothy Beatley, University of Virginia
"To what extent can cities and urbanized regions be said to be biophilic, and to provide the basic conditions for urban citizens to live a life in close contact with nature? What is the precise mix of green and natural elements, the physical and biophysical features, as well as the social institutions and programs needed to educate and foster a curiosity about and life-long love of nature in cities? If urbanites need nature to be healthy and happy, what will be necessary to bring about the conditions of a deeply and richly natural and biophilic urban life? These are subjects addressed in this lecture, and what is anticipated is the development, for the first time, of a comprehensive set of metrics for what a truly biophilic city is, by looking to the practices, ideas and urban conditions of some of the world exemplars and early leaders."
