Naseer Shamma: Lecture and Musical Performance
(Special Event)
Composer and virtuoso Naseer Shamma is the leading exponent of the Iraqi style of oud (11-stringed Arab lute)performance. A humanitarian and activist whose charitable activities include relief work for Iraqi children, Shamma experienced persecution for years under dictator Saddam Hussein's regime. This is his first US tour since the US invasion of Iraq. Shamma hopes the passion and virtuosic precision of his music will serve as a bridge between cultures and help promote empathy, respect, and mutual understanding.
