Ravindra Chhatre: The National Transportation Safety Board Pipeline Safety: Overview and Challenges
(Greater Washington DC Metro Area)
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), an independent Federal accident investigation agency, is charged by Congress with investigating accidents in various modes of transportation: aviation, railroad, highway, marine and pipeline; and with issuing safety recommendations aimed at preventing future accidents.
In his talk, Ravindra Chhatre will describe NTSB's organization, authority, and accident investigation process with an emphasis on pipeline accidents. He will also discuss some recently completed major pipeline accident investigations.
Since joining NTSB in 1998, Chhatre has participated in many high profile natural gas and hazardous pipeline accident investigations. His experience also includes 19 years with the Pacific Gas and Electric Co. in California.
Chhatre received a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Poona, India; an M.S. in Metallurgy from Michigan State University, and an engineering degree from the University of Florida.
He is a member of Alpha Sigma Mu, the Metallurgy and Materials Honor Society, and a Registered Professional Corrosion Engineer in the State of California. An active member of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE), Chhatre is past chairman of the Baltimore-Washington section of that organization and has chaired or co-chaired many of its conferences and technical symposia.
