Psychosocial Factors in Asthma --
Asthma remains one of the most common chronic diseases in
children and adolescents, yet despite substantial progress in medical treatment asthma control remains unsatisfactory. Psychosocial factors have long been recognized as important determinants of asthma pathophysiology and management, but actual pathways of influence have remained largely unspecified. The presentation explores a multilevel-multicomponent model of asthma in the spirit of a biopsychosocial approach to chronic disease. Research is presented that demonstrates direct effects of emotion and stress on aspects of airway health relevant to asthma, including lung function and
airway immunology. In addition, behavioral medicine approaches to asthma treatment are outlined, with a particular focus on a recently completed clinical trial of breathing training in asthma. More information...
