The Changing Medical View of Memory Disorders and Alzheimer's Disease
(VTC)

Rachelle S. Doody, MD, PhD
Effie Marie Cain Chair in Alzheimer's Disease Research
Director of the Alzheimer's Disease and Memory Disorders Center
Baylor College of Medicine
Houston, Texas

Neurodegenerative disorders that cause memory loss begin decades before clinical symptoms appear. Individuals at increased risk can be identified based upon genetics, lifestyle, and the presence of subtle cognitive signs, especially in the presence of biological markers that suggest Alzheimer's disease pathology. We are entering an era of prevention trials for Alzheimer's disease, even as we broaden and refine the treatment targets.
