Carilion Clinic Research Day

Carilion Clinic's sixth annual Research Day will take place April 25 at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute. Kicking off at 11:30 a.m., the event will consist of a poster session and an awards ceremony followed by presentations by three speakers.
The conference has been developed to highlight translational research and its important role as one of Carilion Clinic's three pillars. The atmosphere will be informal, with the audience encouraged to participate in discussions.
The primary target audience is physicians, although other health care providers and nonclinical researchers, such as PhDs and research support staff, will benefit from this educational opportunity. Physicians attending the lectures are eligible for 2.5 continuing medical education credits.
Afternoon presentations will be as follows:
Novel Wound Healing Drugs
Robert Gourdie, PhD, Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute and Carilion Clinic
Participants will recognize therapeutic uses for novel wound-healing drugs. Participants will also acquire knowledge of the molecular mechanism of novel wound-healing drugs in development.
Discovery and Development of a Drug to Treat Double Chins
Michael Kolodney, MD, PhD, Carilion Clinic Dermatology and Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
Participants will be able to describe the steps required for a molecule discovered in the laboratory to become a FDA-approved drug. Participants will also acquire knowledge of noninvasive approaches for reduction of subcutaneous fat.
An Applied Academic Approach to the Fungal Meningitis Outbreak at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital
Thomas Kerkering, MD, Carilion Clinic Infectious Diseases and Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
Participants will be able to describe the epidemiology of an outbreak and to recognize how to take unexpected clinical events and approach them in a meaningful manner.
