Status of Underrepresented Minorities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
(Diversity)
Join the College of Science Diversity Committee for a presentation hosted by Dr. Milton Slaughter, Professor and Department Head Emeritus of Physics at the University of New Orleans and Visiting Professor of Physics at Florida International University.
One of the most frequently discussed topics in academic and governmental circles today is what should be the role of colleges and universities and governmental agencies at the Federal, State, and Local level in increasing the number of underrepresented minorities in the professional ranks of mainstream America, finding effective and systemic strategies which improve the racial climate and promote understanding and sensitivity on the various campuses, and improving recruitment and retention of minorities. This discussion, especially for STEM fields, is extant at the undergraduate as well as graduate level. We suggest solutions which partially address this chronic and acute problem of identifying, attracting, motivating, retaining, and then preparing talented underrepresented minority undergraduate students for graduation with STEM baccalaureate degrees, for further STEM graduate studies, especially at the doctorate level, and for productive careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
