A public lecture in the Distinguished Scholars Series
As director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at the National Institutes of Health, Gary Gibbons, MD, oversees the third largest Institute with an annual budget of approximately $3 billion and 1,000 employees. The NHLBI provides global leadership for research, training, and education programs to promote the prevention and treatment of heart, lung, and blood disease and enhance the health of all individuals so that they can live longer and more fulfilling lives.
In light of a changing political, fiscal, scientific, and technological landscape, the NHLBI initiated a strategic priority setting and resource management process that harnesses the collective intelligence of NHLBI staff, researchers, and stakeholders. These processes are guided by enduring principles to seize unprecedented opportunities to support transformative research that advances public health.
