  Aviva Rahmaini, Coda: Blued Trees
(Arts)

Dr. Aviva Rahmani, an Ecological Artists, began "Blued Tree Symphony" in Peekskill, NY on the summer solstice of 2015 when a group of activists fighting the Algonquin Incremental Pipeline (AIM) hired her to create a public artwork designed to initiate discussion concerning the dangers of natural gas pipelines. The AIM, a 42-inch-high pressure, natural gas pipeline will be built within 105 feet of the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant, just 30 miles from New York City. The original Blued Trees were cut down and are the "Joan of Arcs" of the project. In August 2015, Blued Trees came to Blacksburg, Virginia and were painted along the proposed Mountain Valley Pipeline route on Brush Mountain.

"The Blued Trees Symphony takes place in a forest, but "Coda: Blued Trees" is a site specific gallery installation conceptualized by Rahmani for Virginia Tech's Perspective Gallery. In the spirit of social practice art, "Coda: Blued Trees" has been created by Virginia Tech students, faculty, and community members.

Dr. Rahmani will be an artist in residence November 4 - 11, 2016 and will participate in class lectures, and Art Walk on Brush Mountain November 9 at 4 - 6 p.m., a public lecture at the Lyric Theater on November 10, 5 p.m., and an art reception at Perspective Gallery 5 - 7 p.m. on November 11.
