SIREN Seminar: Joseph Pilat -- The Post-Chernobyl Nuclear Safety Negotiations
(Greater Washington DC Metro Area)
Joseph F. Pilat, program manager of National Security and International studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory, will present "The Post-Chernobyl Nuclear Safety Negotiations."
Following the Chernobyl nuclear accident in the spring of 1986, summer negotiations were held in Vienna at the International Atomic Energy Agency on conventions for early warning and mutual assistance in the event of a nuclear accident with transnational radiation releases. The negotiations, which broke new ground on the coverage of military activities, were contentious.
In this presentation, Pilat -- as a member of the U.S. delegation -- will offer a personal reflection on the negotiations and their aftermath.
Pilat is also a Global Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., where he co-directs the Nonproliferation Forum.
For those unable to attend in person, a live webcast is available at http://www.ncr.vt.edu/live/
